আমজাদ ২৫ লক্ষ টাকা খরচ করে একেবারে নতুন একটি ঝকঝকে সিলভার কালারের গাড়ি কিনল। গাড়িটি দেখে তার স্ত্রী, দুই সন্তান, এবং বাবা-মা খুশিতে আত্মহারা। ঠিক দুই মাস আগেই তারা নতুন একটি অ্যাপার্টমেন্টে উঠেছে। কঠোর পরিশ্রমের পাশাপাশি ভাগ্যও যেন আমজাদের পক্ষে ছিল।

Amzad spent 2.5 million taka on a brand new, shiny silver car. His wife, two children, and parents were overjoyed at the sight of the car. Just two months earlier, they had moved into a new apartment. Along with hard work, luck also seemed to favor Amzad.

এই খুশিতে আমজাদ একটি পার্টি দিল। অফিসের সহকর্মীরা দুপুর থেকে বিকেল পর্যন্ত এবং আত্মীয়-স্বজন সন্ধ্যা থেকে রাত পর্যন্ত আমন্ত্রিত ছিল। হৈ-হুল্লোড় আর খাওয়া-দাওয়ার মধ্যে দিয়ে পার্টি শেষ হলো।

In this joy, Amzad threw a party. Colleagues were invited from noon to evening, and relatives from evening till night. The party ended with a lot of excitement and a grand feast.

পরের দিন থেকে আমজাদ তার নতুন গাড়িতে অফিস করবে, সন্তানরা গাড়িতে স্কুলে যাবে, স্ত্রী গাড়িতে শপিংয়ে যাবে—ভাবতেই আমজাদের গর্বে বুক ফুলে উঠল। নিজের পরিবারের ভবিষ্যতের কথা ভেবে, আমজাদ স্ত্রীর নামে ২৫ লক্ষ টাকার সঞ্চয়পত্র কিনেছে, সন্তানদের নামে ডিপিএস ও এফডিআর করে রেখেছে। পরিবার যেন থাকে দুধে-ভাতে।

From the next day, Amzad would drive to the office in his new car, his children would go to school in it, and his wife would go shopping in it—the thought made Amzad proud. Thinking about his family's future, he had bought a 2.5 million taka savings certificate in his wife's name, and DPS and FDR accounts for his children. The family seemed to be set for life.

কিন্তু চার মাস পর, এক ভয়াবহ দুর্ঘটনায় আমজাদ মারা গেল। একটি কাভার্ড ভ্যানের সাথে মুখোমুখি সংঘর্ষে তার গাড়িটি দুমড়ে-মুচড়ে গেল এবং ঘটনাস্থলেই আমজাদ মারা যায়। তার ড্রাইভার বরাবরই রাফ ড্রাইভিং করত, যদিও আমজাদ যতদিন নিজে চালিয়েছে, ধীরস্থির ভাবেই চালিয়েছে।

But four months later, a terrible accident claimed Amzad's life. His car was crushed in a collision with a covered van, and Amzad died on the spot. His driver had always driven recklessly, though Amzad himself had always driven calmly.

আমজাদের মৃত্যুতে পুরো পরিবার শোকে ভেঙে পড়ল। তার মা এমন শোক মানতে পারছিলেন না, বারবার মূর্ছা যাচ্ছিলেন। স্ত্রী পাথর হয়ে গিয়েছিল, সন্তানরা চিৎকার করে কাঁদছিল। সুখের সংসারটা মুহূর্তেই ভেঙে গেল।

The family was devastated by Amzad's death. His mother couldn’t bear the grief and kept fainting. His wife was in shock, and his children were crying loudly. The happy household had shattered in an instant.

আমজাদের দাফনের পর, দুই ফেরেশতা এসে তার সাথে কিছু প্রশ্ন করল। তারপর তাকে আসমানের দিকে নিয়ে চলল। কিন্তু আসমানের মাঝপথে একটি আওয়াজ এলো, "থামো, এর আত্মা আর এগোতে পারবে না। এর অনেক ঋণ রয়েছে। যতদিন ঋণ শোধ হবে না, ততদিন এর আত্মা গ্রহণযোগ্য হবে না। তাকে আবার তার কবরে ফিরিয়ে দাও।"

After Amzad’s burial, two angels came to him and asked him some questions. Then, they started to take him to the sky. But halfway, a voice said, “Stop, his soul cannot proceed. He has many debts. Until his debts are cleared, his soul will not be accepted. Return him to his grave.”

আমজাদ কবরে ফিরে এসে চিৎকার করে বলল, "আমার ঋণগুলো শোধ কর, সঞ্চয়পত্র, ডিপিএস সব ভেঙে ফেল, আমি আর এই যন্ত্রণা সহ্য করতে পারছি না।" কিন্তু তার সেই আর্তনাদ কেউ শুনতে পেল না।

Amzad returned to his grave and cried out, “Pay off my debts, break the savings certificates and DPS, I cannot bear this pain anymore.” But no one could hear his desperate plea.

এভাবে ছয় মাস কেটে গেল। ঋণগুলো শোধ না হওয়ায় আমজাদের আত্মা কবরে কষ্ট পাচ্ছিল। সে অনুশোচনা করতে লাগল, "বেঁচে থাকতে পরিবারের জন্য কত কিছু করেছি, অথচ আজ আমার কোন মূল্য নেই। আমার ঋণ এখনও শোধ হয়নি, আর হবে কিনা তাও জানি না।"

Six months passed like this. As the debts were not cleared, Amzad's soul suffered in the grave. He regretted, “I did so much for my family while I was alive, but today I have no worth. My debts are still unpaid, and I don’t know if they ever will be.”

এরপর একদিন আসরের আযানে আমজাদের ঘুম ভাঙল। সে দেখল এতক্ষণ সে স্বপ্ন দেখছিল। ঘেমে একাকার হয়ে গেছে। সেইদিন তার নতুন গাড়ি কিনতে যাওয়ার কথা ছিল, কিন্তু সে ওযু করে মসজিদে চলে গেল। যাওয়ার পথে তার মনে একটাই কথা ঘুরছিল—এই পৃথিবীতে কেউ কারো নয়।

Then one day, Amzad woke up at the call for Asr prayer. He realized he had been dreaming all along. He was drenched in sweat. He was supposed to go buy a new car that day, but instead, he performed ablution and went to the mosque. On his way, one thought kept circling in his mind—no one truly belongs to anyone in this world.

আমজাদ প্রতিজ্ঞা করল, আর কখনো ঋণে জড়াবে না।

Amzad vowed never to get into debt again.
